Consequences

Wildlife species are going extinct! Hundreds of thousands all the way up to several millions of tonnes of bushmeat harvested annually, and those numbers are estimates from early 2000's. In combination with habitat loss and fragmentation, the bushmeat problem has a lot of species spiraling the extinction drain. But it's not too late to stop the them!

"Empty forest syndrome" - occurs when a forest has been stripped of all its wildlife, leaving it quiet and devoid of life. Bushmeat over-exploitation is driving some areas towards the empty forest syndrome because of local extinctions of wildlife. Source

This graph, taken from Brashares et al, 2004, shows the sharp decline of mammal and fish biomass in Ghana because of     over-exploitation, though the numbers are estimates. 41 species of mammals were taken into account, in Ghana alone.

Nonhuman primates are susceptible to the same sort of diseases as humans because we have very similar genetics. This is a bad thing when nonhuman primates are frequently being hunted, butchered, and consumed by people. The risk of diseases like HIV and Ebola jumping from non-humans to humans or vice versa is very high and poses a very serious threat to global health of both humans and wildlife.
