What is bushmeat?

Source
Bushmeat is the meat of wild animals that live in the forests of the tropics, which are commonly referred to as the "bush". This meat is hunted, sold, and consumed by the local, indigenous peoples. Most associate bushmeat with Africa, and use the term wildmeat to refer to other areas of the world, such as South America and Indonesia. There isn't really a difference between the terms so I'll just use bushmeat to refer to everything.

Central and Western Africa are by far the hardest hit regions by the effects of bushmeat hunting and are typically the focus of organizations involved in solving this problem.

Types of animals that are hunted are pretty diverse, which is why this is a big problem. Animals such as primates, including the great apes, elephants, antelopes, rodents, and pretty much anything else that has meat except the apex predators of those areas. Some websites will try to make it seem like the bushmeat crisis is only about the primates, especially the great apes. It's a good tactic because the great apes are pretty endangered and extremely charismatic, the perfect way to appeal to the general public, but viewing this from a conservationist mindset, diminishing the severity of this problem for other species and possibly exaggerating the severity of only a few just feels wrong.

An extensive list of species that are affected by bushmeat hunting in Africa. The list hasn't been updated since the early 2000's but it provides an excellent idea of the scale of the bushmeat trade. Includes the species' ranks with the IUCN and CITES.
